White Paper – Flexworker: Their motives, aims and needs

The dynamics of the Swiss labor market are changing how we work, partly driven by digitalization. Flexible forms of working are constantly on the rise, and workers are discovering they have new needs that had previously not been given much thought. A joint research study by HR ConScience, the University of Lucerne and swissstaffing is the first to have analyzed flexworkers' motives for wanting to work in this way as well as the opportunities and challenges associated with this type of work.

This white paper uses in-depth, qualitative interviews to ask people in a variety of flexible contract relationships (i.e. flexworkers) about their motives, aims and needs.

Key motives for choosing flexwork include:

  • Good work-life balance thanks to a high level of flexibility
  • Self-determination and autonomy to define working hours, locations and contract relationships
  • Sense of fulfillment and development thanks to changing assignments
  • Recognition thanks to immediate feedback after every assignment
  • Like with any form of employment, financial considerations also play a key role
